Our Occupational Medical Services

  • Pre-employment assessments are used to provide a health surveillance baselines and ensure that a potential employee has no pre-existing ill health or disability that makes the performance of the proposed job difficult or unsafe for the individual, co-workers or third parties e.g. visitors or young people.

The outcome of such an assessment could advise managers on the needs of individuals with physical and mental impairments.

We provide a wide range of tailored pre-employment assessments to accommodate individual companies but can include:

    • General Health Questionnaire and past Medical History

    • General Medical Assessment

    • Spirometry

    • Audiometry

    • Vision

    • ECG (if clinically indicated)

    • Blood Tests (if required)

    • Musculoskeletal Assessment

    • Drug and Alcohol Testing (both laboratory based and onsite)

  • With over 10 year’s experience in NZ Immigration Medical assessments, we aim to have your medical assessment submitted to NZ Immigration within 2-3 working days. We complete your eMedical registration and take your photo at no extra cost, making the entire process streamlined and hassle free for you.

  • “Fit to Work” or “Fitness to Work” is a medical assessment undertaken when an employer wishes to be sure an employee can safely do a specific job or task. The purpose is to determine if medically, the employee can perform the job or task under the working conditions.

Fit to Work assessments are most often required to determine medical fitness after an illness or injury, but are sometimes completed after employment has been offered, as requested by the employer, or as a condition of a job transfer.

We have been undertaking “Fit to Work” assessments for over 20 years and have extensive experience in this field. Our physicians will determine if the person is able to do that particular job as provided by the employer, they may consider physical or mental capacities, sensory acuity, level of skill, etc and only report one of three conditions back to the employer:

    • Fit,

    • Unfit, or

    • Fit subject to work modifications.

  • All our staff are fully trained and AS/NZS 4308:2008 certified to conduct both laboratory and onsite drug tests and we can arrange to come to your worksite to undertake drug testing if required.

Employers, under the Health and Safety Act 1992, must take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of all their employees and customers.

A person under the influence of unlawful drugs or alcohol at work maybe a risk to themselves, co-workers or third parties e.g. visitors or young people.

Drug tests are conducting for the following reasons:

At a Pre-employment Medical Assessment to ascertain their current health/drug status

Following an incident/accident “Post incident” to confirm to rule out drugs/alcohol as causation

On suspicious behavior “Reasonable Cause” to confirm or rule out drugs/alcohol as an issue

Random testing, conducting on a irregular basis on “at risk” staff or staff in sensitive areas of your workplace

Protect your staff, protect your business!

  • NZTA Return of Licence Assessment

Individuals sentenced under Section 65 of the Land Transport Act 1998 and wish to have their disqualification removed (as per Section 100 of the Act), can re-apply for their driver licence after serving the mandatory minimum disqualification period. Part of this process is to undertake a medical assessment for drug and alcohol rehabilitation and RIW Health Ltd is an approved Drug & Alcohol Assessment Centre for the Wellington Region.

Dr Whiteside is an experience Occupational Medical Physician, who will take you through the process for the return of your licence under this criteria and process for approval.

He will assess ‘fitness to drive’ of repeat offenders sentenced for offences involving alcohol and other drugs, and who have a history of such offending.

He will take this opportunity to create a change of thinking and behaviour in identified repeat offenders convicted of offences,

He will identify a framework that will support the process of removing a person’s disqualification from holding or obtaining a driver licence (Section 100 of the Act) to allow people sentenced to reapply for their drivers licence with supporting medical evidence (Blood Tests), assessment and reports to NZTA.

NZTA Heavy Duty Medical Certificates DL9

We are happy to complete the standard medical assessment which is required by NZTA everytime you apply for, or renew, a heavy driver licence.

A Class 2, 3, 4 or 5 driver licence is required to drive heavy motor vehicles.

You must have the right class of driver licence for the type and weight of vehicle you want to drive.

Some specialised vehicles require the driver to also hold an appropriate endorsement, Factsheet 11, Driver licence classes explains the vehicle types and weights covered by each class and endorsement. Factsheets are available on our website and from driver licensing agents.
